Messenger was born in 1883 in Camperdown, New South Wales. He began playing rugby league at a young age, and quickly showed a natural talent for the game. In 1908, he was selected to play for the New South Wales team in the inaugural interstate match against Queensland.

Messenger played a pivotal role in New South Wales' victory in the match, and his performance earned him a place in the Australian team for the 1908-09 Kangaroo tour of Great Britain. The Kangaroos won all 25 matches on the tour, and Messenger was one of the standout players.

Messenger continued to play rugby league for many years after the Kangaroo tour. He captained the New South Wales team to victory in the 1911 interstate match, and was selected to play for Australia in the 1914 and 1920 Test matches against Great Britain.

Messenger retired from playing in 1925, but he remained involved in the game as a coach and administrator. He was the coach of the New South Wales team from 1933 to 1936, and was also a selector for the Australian team.
